The type of plants which grow in an area change with the underlying soil. Some plants are suited to dry and sandy conditions while others grow best in wetlands or swampy environments. The soil on your property will largely be determined by your location, both at the 'big picture' scale, such as how far you are from the coast, and then within the landscape, such as whether your land is adjacent to a river or at the top of a ridge. All these locations will have different soils, be they coastal sands, heavy clay loams, wet waterlogged clay or another.
In order for plants to perform at their best they need to be growing in their favourite conditions. That's why we have prepared species lists for the most common soil types in our region. The species listed are the plants that would have naturally occurred in these locations, so they're not only going to perform well but they'll also provide habitat to local birds and animals too.
Our order forms allow you to name your soil type and the purpose of your planting and leave the plant selection to us, if you like. However, if you want individual advice on your plant selection, please call the project manager and arrange a time to see him. Alternatively you can contact us via fax or email and we will do our utmost to be of assistance.
Below is a series of links to lists of recommended species for various soil types (PDF files) as indicated. We have provided a selection of trees, shrubs and other plant forms for you to consider. Just click on the soil type which more closely matches the soil in your planting area to go to the relevant species list.
Note: Please check our 2010 Growing List before you submit your order to ensure that we will be growing the species you have chosen this coming season.
