ELCOME
COMMUNITY NURSERY
Leschenault
Here at the Leschenault Community Nursery, we're dedicated to encouraging the use of local native species in the revegetation and rehabilitation of land, waterways, wetlands and coastal areas in the South West of Western Australia.

To do this, we supply local native plants to a wide range of clients from shires to farmers to small landholders to urban households.

We grow to order (we are not a retail nursery). On average, we grow over 150,000 plants of over 200 species every year. We grow these plants from either seeds or cuttings, most collected locally by our fantastic team of volunteers.

Something happens at the nursery every month of the year, whether it be seed collecting or drying, pricking out tiny new plants, potting seedlings on into larger pots or taking and growing cuttings - it's all go all of the time and that's the way it needs to be for us to grow the vast number of plants we're asked for.

If you want to order plants, become a volunteer, find out more about the plants from your local area or just want details on our Market Days, this is the place for you. Simply use the links across the top to go to the pages you need.

When the time comes to collect your ordered plants, we are open 7.30am - 12.00pm Monday through Thursday.

2010 MARKET DAYS

After always selling out on last year's Market Days, we've decided to up the ante in 2010. We'll now hold Market Days every Tuesday from 8.30am to 12.30pm and the second Saturday of each month, from April 13th to October 26th.

We've now added a Market Days calendar and a Market Days Flier to our site to help you plan for these events.

The Market Days provide a platform for us to provide down-to-earth information for people new to gardening with native species, as well as providing them with the plants that will grow well in their area.

Latest News!

June and July are ideal months to plant most local species so their root systems are well established before their first summer.
Make sure you set the young plants well into the ground so the roots are kept moist.  Local seedlings generally have higher survival rates when a high proportion of the plant is below ground level, as long as there are still enough leaves exposed to the sunshine.

You'll find a good selection of attractive local shrubs and groundcovers at our
Market Days
which run every single Tuesday and the second Saturday of each month from  8.30 am til 12.30 pm.

On the last Sunday in June over 30 volunteers planted 750 of our young plants at the Wardandi seed orchard in Australind.  These groundcovers and small shrubs  will complement the taller shrubs and trees planted in previous years.  Seed will be available to the nursery next summer from some of the earlier plantings at Wardandi.

WORKING
WITH
THE SEASONS
We're going to keep track of how busy we get and what our customers tell us about the new Days, and we'll add more Days if our customers ask us to, so make sure you tell us what suits you!

As we're building up rather a collection of information, newsletters, and our new 'how to' sheets, we've decided to add a new 'Downloads' page to the site. Don't worry  about not keeping up with the latest - if we add info to the page, we'll let you know in the 'Latest News' column.
